The Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) is an innovative science education program that gives secondary school students a first glimpse into the exciting world of science. Since its foundation in 1990, it has been inspiring students about biotechnology. Amgen's education program is available in twenty countries around the world.
In the Netherlands, Amgen Biotech Experience partnered with the ‘Reizende DNA-Labs’ in 2017. It supports them with laboratory equipment and teaching materials. This helps to provide several practical lessons for high school students with appealing topics such as locating a perpetrator of a crime by isolating DNA traces and creating a DNA profile. Or discovering the best possible treatment for a breast cancer patient through DNA testing. Read more at: http://www.dnalabs.nl/
Another element of the Amgen Biotech Experience is the Master Teacher Fellowship. An annual program in which Amgen Biotech Experience educators are recognized and given the opportunity to develop their own expertise and contribute to the Amgen Biotech Experience through LabXchange and other educational materials. With support from the program and an Amgen advisor, the Fellows will choose a life science topic, conduct a curriculum project, and develop associated classroom resources. ABE Master Teacher Fellows also have the opportunity to become advisors who contribute to the development of the Amgen Biotech Experience program.
There are also teachers in the Netherlands who have gone through such a process.
Established in 2006, the Amgen Scholars Program is an undergraduate summer research experience hosted at 25 premier educational and research institutions across the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada. Participants benefit by conducting a research project under top faculty, participating in seminars and networking events and taking part in a symposium in their respective region. Throughout the program, participants meet peers, present their research findings, learn about biotechnology and hear from leading scientists. Financial support for students is a critical component of the program, which helps ensure that eligible students, regardless of income, can participate.
